FULSHEAR, TX (Covering Katy News) — Don McCoy emerged victorious in the Fulshear Mayor’s runoff race against Joel Patterson, according to unofficial election returns from the Fort Bend County Elections Office.
McCoy secured 858 votes, representing 62% of the total ballots cast, while Patterson received 519 votes, or 38%, out of 1,377 votes in total. This decisive victory underscores McCoy’s strong support within the Fulshear community.
McCoy, the president of the Fulshear-Katy Chamber of Commerce, will continue to lead the organization, which is in the process of rebranding itself as the Fulshear Regional Chamber of Commerce, even after assuming his mayoral duties. His dual roles signify his deep commitment to both the economic and civic vitality of the region.
Patterson, who serves as mayor pro tem and District 4 council member, will continue his council term until May 2025. Despite his loss in the mayoral race, Patterson’s ongoing role on the council ensures his continued influence and contribution to Fulshear’s governance.
McCoy expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the support he received during the campaign. “It was a tremendous effort put forth by the citizens of Fulshear,” McCoy said. “I’ve got to give a shout-out to my volunteers, and all those that encouraged me—my close friends and my family for encouraging me daily.”
The runoff election was necessitated by the close results of the May 4 general election, in which Patterson garnered 480 votes, narrowly edging out McCoy, who received 479 votes. A third candidate, Dom Giametta Jr., a sales executive, secured 165 votes in that election, leading to the need for a runoff between the top two contenders.
McCoy noted the significant efforts to mobilize voters for the runoff. “It was a lot of hard work put forth by a lot of people who believed in the community of Fulshear,” he stated. “I look forward to serving the community of Fulshear with pride and a lot of heart. The Fulshear City Council is set to meet on Tuesday to canvass the election results, making them official. Following this, McCoy will take the oath of office, officially beginning his tenure as Mayor.
McCoy will succeed incumbent Mayor Aaron Groff, who was unable to seek another term due to term limits. Groff’s departure marks the end of an era and the beginning of McCoy’s vision for the future of Fulshear.
